ETHNOASTRONOMY
Traditional astronomy of the Macedonian people
Ethnoastronomy explores folk beliefs related to celestial phenomena.
Research has continued on our country’s territory since 1982, during which a series of beliefs and customs related to celestial bodies and phenomena have been discovered.
These are just some of the findings…

COSMOLOGY
Three worlds
The Macedonian people believe in three worlds: the lower world, our world, and the upper world.
In some regions, it is believed that the underworld is located in the water, and there are water people and animals in it just like in ours. There is a legend in the village of Izvor that people managed to catch a water man. They managed to lure him out by placing a pair of shoes on the shore. But the water man did not want to tell them anything about the underworld and cried constantly. In the end, they took pity on him and allowed him to return to the underworld.
In other places, it is believed that the underworld is located underground. In Mlado Nagoričane, there is a legend that three brothers were chasing a thief who had taken their apples. Following the blood, they reached a hole whose bottom could not be seen. The youngest brother, tied with a rope, descended to the bottom of the hole and thus found himself in the underworld. There he saw a wounded dragon and three beautiful maidens. Around the dragon was a lot of gold, beautiful clothes, and jewelry, everything that the dragon stole from our world and took to the underworld.
The upper world is located in the sky, and it is most often believed that the souls of the dead live there. However, there are also beliefs that in heaven there is the same earth as ours and the same people. When the Lord rebukes the heavenly people, then we hear it like thunder.
Earth

The Earth is an endless flat plate that floats on water. There are also beliefs that the Earth stands on poles or on the horns of oxen or buffaloes. In the village of Orashe, it is believed that the Earth has an end. It is imagined as a large and eternally dark desert where wild people live.
Mountains and plains were created when God walked the Earth. He walked the world with a bag full of earth and stones. Wherever he threw earth, a plain would form, and wherever he threw stones, hills and mountains would form. Sometimes the bag would overflow, and then great mountains and valleys would form.
Earthquakes
The Earth is flat and stands on a pole to which a buffalo is tied. When the buffalo moves or scratches itself on the pole, earthquakes occur. The buffalo sometimes licks the pole so that it becomes thinner, breaks, and runs away. That is why on the feast of St. Spiridon, blacksmiths knock on the anvil three times to thicken the pole and save the Earth from ruin. In some regions, instead of a buffalo, it is believed that the devil is tied to the pole. When the devil bites the pole to free himself from it, the earth also shakes

Sky
The sky resembles a great pier. It has no end and is as wide as it is high. The most common belief is that it is supported by high mountains, and there people found the connection between Heaven and Earth.
In some parts it is believed that there is more than one heaven. Thus, in the village of Murtino it was believed that the stars are located in the third heaven, and below them are the Sun and the Moon. On the holiday of Prochka, the sky and the earth are forgiven, and then the sky opens. Whoever sees this, whatever he wishes will come true.

Sun
The Sun was everywhere considered the most beautiful, best, and purest thing in the whole world. But when three Suns appeared in the sky, the people believed that it was a bad sign.
In the village of Oraše they believed that there used to be three Suns, but one was eaten by a snake, the second went underground to warm us, and the third is the one that does not warm us. In the village of Rankovce they believed that the Sun and the Moon were son and mother. They believed that every time the Sun “set”, the Moon, its mother, gave it something to eat. But one day she had nothing to give it to eat, so she gave it half of herself to eat. From then on, the Moon began to shine weaker than the Sun.

Moon
The people believed that the Moon changed every 15 days. In the village of Rankovce, it is said that a “witch” would take down the Moon when she was hungry and eat it. That’s why it became like a sickle. Then she would put it back in place and wait 15 days for it to fill up again. Then she would take it down again and eat it. That’s why the Moon changed every 15 days.
The moon didn’t always look like this. It used to be brighter. But once it met the sun and wouldn’t let it go. The sun got angry, took a piece of cake, and hit the moon. Since then, it has had stripes and is less bright.
Мoon phase
The Moon and its phases played a particularly important role in the lives of people in the past. The New Moon is popularly called Novina. It is a period when all important work began: building houses, plowing the fields, and sowing them. It was also a time when engagements and weddings were held, because it was believed that as the Moon “grows”, it would bring a fruitful and prosperous life, many children, and joy.
The full Moon was admired just as much as the Sun. There are many stories about witch women who had rituals in which they would bring down the Moon, turn it into a cow, and milk it. Then, with that milk, they would make various medicines and magical potions.
The phases after the full Moon are called Pogibel, Rasip, Izedovina, and the like. During that period, no important work was started, because it was believed that nothing would succeed. Then only medicines were made, and treatment of the sick was started with the belief that the disease would be “eaten up” as the Moon is eaten.
STARRY SKY
Among the Macedonian people, there is a fateful connection between people and stars. It was believed that when a person is born, a new star is born in the sky, and when a person dies, the star goes out. The stars of great people are brighter, and those of poor people are less bright. The fate of a child can also be predicted according to the star. If a bright star appears in the sky after birth, it means that the child will grow up to be a great person.
Constellations
We divide the starry sky into three large groups. The northern sky can be seen every night. The southern sky is divided into winter and summer sky, because only these two seasons are known to the people. Summer is from St. George’s Day to St. Michael’s Day, and winter is from St. Michael’s Day to St. George’s Day.

In the traditions of the Macedonian people, certain bright or easily recognizable groups of stars form constellations or groups of constellations, where most often the individual stars represent a certain object or character.
For example, in the constellation Orion, among Macedonians the bright star Betelgeuse represents the Plowman; in Orion’s belt, Rallo with oxen is depicted; and the two lowest bright stars, Rigel and Regulus, form the constellation Theresia. Or, the brightest star in the Pleiades star cluster is known to us as the Hen, and the fainter stars are chicks.
The northern sky is dominated by two constellations, one of which is the Ears, known in astronomy as Cassiopeia. The Ears represent the part of a wooden plow that penetrates the ground during plowing.
The constellation Orion is a group of constellations in our country; the bright star Betelgeuse is the Plowman, near Orion’s belt is the Plow with Oxen, and the lower bright stars are Libra. The Plowman has returned for the ax that he forgot and is therefore located further away from the plow.
One of the most famous constellations in our country is the Hen. It is located in the Pleiades star cluster. The brightest star represents the Hen, and the fainter ones are the chicks.
